EMD SD45-2 DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE - ATHEARN GENESIS DCC/Sound
Brief history.
Derived from the previous SD45, the C-C wheelset 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive EMD SD45-2 has a slightly different look, especially in the rear of its carbody (the primary visual difference is the presence of the lack of flared radiators). Built between 1972 and 1974 in only 136 units, the SD45-2 is a part of the EMD Dash-2 line. The new model using the same engine produced by General Motors, the 20-cylinder model 645E3 prime mover with a power of 3.600 HP. The 20-cylinder, powerful and reliable, it will also be equipped the SD40-2 series just few year later. This is the main reason why few SD45-2 series locomotives were sold (the SD40-2 was similar but slightly smaller and lighter, with improvements in many functional parts).
The largest owner of the SD45-2 was the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe RR with 90 units, the Clinchfield had 18 units, Seaboard Coast line had 15 units and Erie Lackawanna rostered 13 new engines in 1972.

Conrail (former Erie Lackawanna) number #6661.
Conrail inerithed only 13 EMD SD45-2 in April, 1976, re-numbered 6654-6666. All units was built in 1972, November, about the construction order number 7381. CR-6661 worked in its original livery (former EL with CR patch) until early 1980, when it was painted in the official Conrail blue color with complete "can opener" logos and insigna. After finishing its career in Conrail it was employed by CSX (number 8886), then re-built into SD40-2 and retired at the end of 2022.
