The San Francisco debuts of New York Polyphony and the Danish String Quartet, the return of dancer-choreographer Wendy Whelan, appearances by tenor Lawrence Brownlee and soprano Dawn Upshaw and a “Glass@80” program featuring revered composer Philip Glass are among the highlights of San Francisco Performances’ 2017-18 season, announced April 3 by the organization’s president, Melanie Smith. The season – S.F. Performances’ 38th – runs October 1, 2017, through May 19, 2018. More than 50 artists in chamber music, dance, piano, vocal music, jazz, guitar, special events and family matinees are on the schedule.

Hear Now and Then, a new series of programs encompassing contemporary and early music, brings the Kronos Quartet, with Youth Speaks and The Living Earth Show (Oct. 7), New York Polyphony (Dec. 3), Glass and the Philip Glass Ensemble (Feb. 20, 2018), and viola da gambist Jordi Savall, with a consort of Celtic winds (May 3, 2018.) S.F. Performances’ innovative PIVOT series continues with pianist Sarah Cahill and the Alexander String Quartet in music by Lou Harrison (Jan. 24), as well as programs featuring the LA Dance Project, Timo Andres, and Joe Goode.

Two renowned pianists, Andres Schiff and Yuja Wang, will be featured on special performances in the late spring.
