At this point the 1970 rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” is such a familiar part of the pop culture landscape that it’s interesting to see it anew just to remind ourselves how cheeky its depiction of the Jesus story really is. The Jesus of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical is prickly and passive-aggressive, overwhelmed by the pressure of his role. His apostles and other followers come off as a blithe and opportunistic gaggle of frolicking hippies having cuddle parties. The anguished Judas is perhaps the show’s most sympathetic character; he thinks Jesus is besotted with his own fame and has lost sight of the plight of the oppressed people, and he’s shot down every time he tries to talk to his leader about his concerns.

The Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” playing at Livermore’s Bankhead Theater puts the focus back onto the messianic figure at the center of one of the world’s major religions, This shift happens not through any reimagining of the material but just through performance, Nikita Burshteyn, who starred in last year’s “Pirates of Penzance,” portrays a charismatic Jesus, and his lovely voice makes even some of the shriller falsetto heights of the role sound good, Russell Mangan sings well enough as Judas, but his brooding portrayal displays none of the passion required to win the viewer’s sympathies or for his fiery numbers to really weddings, flat wedding shoes, lace shoes, pearl wedding shoes, bridal flats, lace wedding shoes, ballet shoes, princess ballet s ignite..

Ably directed by Kathleen Breedveld and Paul Vega, the Tri-Valley Rep staging sports some fine performances in many roles. Fresh from the company’s production of “In the Heights,” Cheyenne Wells makes a touchingly heartfelt Mary Magdalene. Reading this on your phone? DC Scarpelli, who starred in “The King and I” two years ago, is a delightfully decadent King Herod, and Matthew Liebowitz makes a dramatically moody and conflicted Pontius Pilate. Matt Davis lends the high priest Caiaphas a perfectly sinister, booming bass voice, complimented by the snarky insinuations of Jeff Seaberg as his sidekick Annas.

Although less ponderous than most of Webber’s works, the score is dizzyingly busy at times, and the small orchestra under the direction of Sierra Dee does a fine job navigating it, What really comes through is how much the musical is a product of its time, composed in the wake of “Hair” and influenced by the psychedelic 1960s, and that’s reflected in the music as much as in the depiction of Jesus’ followers as spaced-out hippies content to groove on their savior’s vibe, It weddings, flat wedding shoes, lace shoes, pearl wedding shoes, bridal flats, lace wedding shoes, ballet shoes, princess ballet s also comes out in Morgan Stinson and Cathrine Delos Santos’ casual, freewheeling choreography, especially the desultory, lethargic dances of the three “tormentors” (young women in ragged skirts) who hang around Judas..

When all the decadence and groovy singing finally, suddenly recedes for a stark reminder of the grim, inevitable ending of this story, the viewer might, for a moment, feel what the complacent apostles in the musical must feel: “Wow man, what a bummer.”.
