Twenty-three years after she originated the stage role, Glenn Close is back on Broadway playing Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard,” and it’s a performance that’s gutsier and more gripping than ever. Her mesmerizing spooky, clinging Norma, who dissolves bit by bit into a dementia of faded silver-screen glory, blots out everything else in this  second-tier musical — except for the gorgeous crescendos of the 40-member orchestra that accompanies her on the stage of the Palace Theatre, where the revival had its official opening Feb. 8.

Thank heavens Lloyd Webber, director Lonny Price 56 hand painted clipart ink watercolor graphics | ballet dancing | painting sketch artwork | high resolution printable | png and conductor Kristen Blodgette drummed up such an exhilarating sound: Their music vies with the evening’s star for most ecstatic presence, Not that Close is a songbird or stylist in the way that others are who’ve played the role — most notably, Betty Buckley, Elaine Paige and Patti LuPone, She’s in another category — an emotionally disturbed symphony unto herself, One wishes there were a more compelling rationale to dissect other aspects of the show, but “Sunset” doesn’t reveal many new colors in this revival, imported from London’s English National Opera, other than the bejeweled, beaded and sequin-spangled outfits worn by Close, Designer Anthony Powell wraps this Norma in deliriously spotlight-catching drama: the silk pajamas, Chinese jackets, and furs and robes and capes in animal prints and gold lamé that accentuate the glamorous mythos of old Hollywood, and one of its fallen goddesses..

All else in this adaptation of film director Billy Wilder’s 1950 noirish melodrama, with Gloria Swanson and William Holden, is pretty forgettable, and the lyrics, credited to Don Black and Christopher Hampton, are worse than that. “Sunset Boulevard/ Headline Boulevard/ Getting here is only the beginning,” goes the cringe-worthy title song. In terms of music, Lloyd Webber echoes here the swooning romanticism of period movie scores, but the effect is overkill: He recycles a handful of melody lines over and over and over, the result being that the songs are reduced to nothing more special than commercial jingles. A few are quite fetching — Norma’s introductory anthem of self-infatuation, “With One Look,” and Act 2’s galvanizing “As If We Never Said Goodbye” are sentimentally pitched in the right way: richly nostalgic ballads fit for a movie queen.

The other principal characters, led by Michael Xavier’s Joe Gillis, the struggling screenwriter with whom Norma becomes dangerously obsessed, remain mere dots on Norma’s ghoulish map, The musical aspires to a jaundiced sophistication about Hollywood’s ways in the age of epic filmmakers such as Cecil B, DeMille (Paul Schoeffler), but 56 hand painted clipart ink watercolor graphics | ballet dancing | painting sketch artwork | high resolution printable | png the satirical air here is filled only with desultory clichés, And wondrously, none of this matters whenever Close is in view, This Norma is a glorious freak, her face a damaged mask of youthfulness melting into grotesqueness, her eyes fixed in a kind of unhinged glaze, as if the backlot lights permanently blinded her, And of course, they did, When at last she has crossed over into lunacy, dressed up garishly as some bizarre version of the Salome she never got to play, Close’s Norma leaves you thunderstruck, As she dances the mad dance of her pitiable Salome, your heart somehow sinks and beats faster, all at once..

Camille Larrea never misses a beat, Which is good, because she’s a giant heart, A giant, dancing, singing-telegram heart, with a little tap dance here, a little soft shoe there and an entire circulatory system filled with soul, pumping out that old Nat King Cole “L-O-V-E” song — you know, “L … is for the way you … 56 hand painted clipart ink watercolor graphics | ballet dancing | painting sketch artwork | high resolution printable | png look … at me, O … is for the only … one … I see …” and so forth and so on, “With a Valentine heart, it’s cute, and everyone loves it,” the Concord-based entertainer says. “You can’t get mad at a dancing heart.”..
