We finally made our way to California’s Great America WinterFest over the weekend, and it turned out to be a much bigger holiday treat than I had expected, You might think WinterFest is just Great America with a few extra lights here and there with Santa and his reindeer mounted on the Gold Striker rollercoaster, but the first-time event dance shoes wall decal sticker bedroom home room art vinyl inspirational decor teen girls ballet dancer nursery baby turned out to be a lot more delightful, Cedar Fair — the owner of the Santa Clara amusement park — deserves a hearty, “Ho Ho Ho,” for transforming the park into a real winter wonderland, Nothing says California Christmas like watching kids dance around as fake “snow” is blown onto them from above..

There are a few extra lights — the park is lit with approximately 7 million LED lights, plus holiday-themed projections on the ground — and the dual centerpieces are the 60-foot tall tree and ice skating rink that flank the Columbia Carousel.  Most restaurants and shops have been re-branded with holiday-themed names, too, like Maggie Brown’s Festive Feast, Prancer’s Pizza and Snoopy’s Stocking Stuffers. Even the 360-degree-view “Star Tower” ride was cutely renamed the “North Pole.”.

The kid-friendly Planet Snoopy area was a treat thanks to the obvious connection to “A Charlie Brown Christmas” (though all the trees at Charlie Brown’s Tree Lot looked dance shoes wall decal sticker bedroom home room art vinyl inspirational decor teen girls ballet dancer nursery baby a lot more robust than the one he liked in the TV special), There’s also an entire gingerbread neighborhood in Candy Cane Lane, a backstage area normally closed off to visitors that’s been temporarily converted into a pass-through, There also are several live shows produced specifically for WinterFest, with singers belting out holiday favorites to a Peanuts ice show, We’re softies, though, and enjoyed the old-fashioned Christmas message of “Tinker’s Toy Factory,” a song-and-dance show in Theatre Royale that had plenty of Silicon Valley gift shout-outs as Santa’s elves tried to fill gift orders for Fitbits, iPhones, Xboxes and Tesla Model 3s..

Be forewarned, though, that only a portion of the park and a limited number of rides are open, so it’s a different Great America experience than you might be used to. (Food and souvenirs remain as costly as you remember, and it does cost extra to skate). But right out of the gate, WinterFest is shaping up to be a good addition to the Bay Area’s holiday lineup. It’s open 5-10 p.m. daily through Dec. 30, and you can get details and tickets at www.cagreatamerica.com. NON-TRADITIONAL ARRANGEMENTS: I had a fun time Sunday afternoon reading kids’ letters to Santa Claus as part of Tabard Theatre’s “Big Band Christmas Surprise, featuring Gus Kambeitz‘s band Nineteen at Theatre on San Pedro Square. Of course, I thought I was the surprise but vocalist Juanita Harris had an even better surprise in store. During one of the traditional holiday tunes arranged for a big band by Bob Aron, Harris held her phone in one hand and her microphone in the other as she broadcasted herself performing via Facebook Live.
