Los Gatos resident Amy Alden is among the returning volunteers–she’s the official Music in the Park photographer. “I went to a concert last summer with my sister and took some cool shots with my phone,” Alden said. “I met Scott and told him I’d like to volunteer because it struck me as something really special.”. Alden is a professional photographer who shot band performances for 15 years at the Salmon Days Festival in Issaquah, Wash. She also photographed the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

When Alden moved to Los Gatos from Washington state two years ago, she really didn’t know anyone in town, But that all changed when she began volunteering, “Music in the Park doesn’t end when the concert season ends,” Alden said, “We go to music events together to hear bands, so the momentum continues throughout the year, My sister and I went to see the Houserockers perform in Santa Clara on New Year’s Eve, and there were a lot of Music in slippers/ ballet shoes/ crochet shoes the Park volunteers there.”..

The Houserockers are a Los Gatos-based band whose leader, Paul Kent, is a Music in the Park director. So, it’s certain the Houserockers and the Johnny Neri Band will perform at the Los Gatos Park Dance since Kent co-founded the event five years ago. Other than that, mum’s the word as far as the band line-up goes. The bands use the town council lobby as a “green room,” where they can relax before and after their performance, and during intermission. “Two volunteers set up food for them and literally stay with them until they leave,” Canali said. “We also have a couple of parking volunteers, who try to keep people from dropping concert-goers off on Main Street. They direct drop-offs to the civic center parking lot. And we use more than half a dozen ushers each week to monitor the sponsor section and keep an eye on things in general.”.

There’s a lot to watch since last year’s average attendance was 4,400  per concert, Canali said, The list of volunteer jobs includes a hospitality assistant, who works with sponsors, and a food and drink pickup person who supplies the refreshments for the bands and sponsors, Additionally, there’s the slippers/ ballet shoes/ crochet shoes setup and tear-down crew who are responsible for sponsor seating and tents, and also for making sure pathways are outlined so people can safely move about, “We still need help with that,” Canali said, “Even though we get volunteers from TeenForce, it would be great to have a few more people, especially high school kids who can get community service credits.”..

Another critical position is simply known as “pass the hat” because these volunteers ask concert-goers for donations during intermission. “Last year we had a really great volunteer team,” Canali said. “We hosted a dinner for them and an end-of-season volunteer party. It’s a great way to be social and meet new people.”. That’s evidenced by the fact that one woman volunteer is now dating a guy she met at a concert last summer; they’re still going strong by all accounts and celebrated their first Valentine’s Day earlier this week.

Five years after opening its doors, the Los Gatos Library is going strong with attendance figures showing nearly 324,000 people visited the facility during the 2015-16 fiscal year, In contrast, the old library had just under 222,000 visitors in 2010-11, The library celebrated its anniversary Feb, 11 with a variety of family-oriented slippers/ ballet shoes/ crochet shoes activities, including a children’s photo booth and a dance party, Although the dance was billed as an “all ages” event, it was 20-month old Paige Hofferber and 16-month-old Brook Palmans who stole the show, bouncing to the beat as their happy parents played along..

“My husband and I both work during the week, but sometimes my mom and dad bring her to story time on Fridays,” Paula Palmans said. “We love to play with Brook here, and she loves climbing on the tables. It’s such a good activity, especially when it’s raining.”. Story times have become a popular fixture in the children’s room and are held four times a week for babies and preschoolers. Well over 17,000 children attended last year’s story times. “Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes, and eyes and ears and mouth and nose,” children’s librarian Catherine Gildea called out happily to the little ones.

She and librarian Jenn Laredo danced slippers/ ballet shoes/ crochet shoes and sang for their charges, a not-so-subtle sign that this library is not always quiet, The library is also popular with teenagers; many walk over from Los Gatos High School to hang out after school in the Teen Room, Last year, an estimated 20,000 teens visited the library, “I come over a couple of times a week,” sophomore Jenny Nguyen said, “I really like the environment here after school, It’s a good study vibe and fun, too.”, One reason for the library’s popularity is that it’s grown beyond books, offering more than 500 programs ranging from Internet 101 to Genealogy for Beginners, and even knitting..
