It often feels as if every popular or cult movie is going to be made into a stage musical, if it hasn’t been already. While that’s obviously a bit of an overstatement, the Hollywood to Broadway pipeline has been mighty clogged in recent years with all kinds of unlikely flicks getting the song and dance treatment. A case in point is “Ghost the Musical,” which OMG I Love That Show! Productions is currently giving its West Coast premiere at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts (on the smallest of the center’s three stages). The hit 1990 movie about the ghost of a murdered man who has to learn to communicate with the living world to try to save his girlfriend seems like a curious but fascinating choice for the musical treatment.

The show was written by Bruce Joel Rubin, adapted from his own Oscar-winning screenplay, with music by Dave Stewart (half of the band Eurythmics) and Glen Ballard (cowriter and producer of Alanis Morissette’s breakout album “Jagged Little Pill”) and lyrics by all three gents, The musical debuted in Manchester, England, in 2011, moved to London’s West End later that year and hit Broadway in 2012, The show is impressively faithful to the movie, including pretty much all of its memorable lines and scenes, leading to a few choppy transitions in a different medium, Sadly left out is the old music hall song “I’m Henery the Eighth, I Am” (also a hit for Herman’s Hermits), which Sam the ghost uses to badger people into helping him in the movie, so we have to settle for unicorn baby moccasin shoes, flower girl shoes, baby shower gift, birthday gift, toddler shoes, ballet shoes for girls,1st birth “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.”..

With an ensemble cast of 10 playing a multitude of parts, the pared-down OMG production helmed by artistic director Ryan Cowles is generally quite entertaining but also highlights some of the challenges of adapting a fantasy movie to the stage, its supernatural effects often amusingly makeshift. Perhaps the most memorable moment in the movie, the iconic pottery wheel scene, loses its oomph with Sam vaguely mumbling along with a recording of the Righteous Brothers hit “Unchained Melody,” a song he sings a couple other times in the show.

Michelle Ianiro is delightfully comical and obstreperous as the charismatic huckster medium Oda Mae Brown (the role that won Whoopi Goldberg an Oscar), delivering perhaps the show’s most entertaining number, the gospel-funk “Are You a Believer.” Sam Leeper is a distant and preoccupied Carl, Sam’s friend and coworker, usually staring at his smart phone. (Clearly this version is no longer set in 1990.) Mark Enea is appropriately sleazy as the mugger who sets things in motion, Derek Travis Collard is a friendly ghost who helps orient Sam, and the actor named Mighty is intense and athletic as a belligerent subway ghost.

Organizers expect to announce a complete entertainment line-up for the 2017 Music in the Park summer concert series in April. The 11-concert season opens Father’s Day, June 18, on the front lawn of the Los Gatos Civic Center at 110 E. Main St. The final concert is the Sept. 2 Los Gatos Park Dance on Labor Day weekend at Oak Meadow Park. All concerts start at 5 p.m. and are free to the public, thanks in large part to local sponsors who financially support the series and the volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure all goes well.
