BROADWAY LIMITED IMPORT > Pennsylvania Railroad P-5 ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE
(2019)
The PRRs class P5 comprised 92 mixed-traffic electric locomotives constructed 19311935 by the PRR, Westinghouse and General Electric. Although the original intention was that they work passenger trains, the success of the GG1 meant that the P5 class were mostly used on freight. A single survivor, prototype #4700, is at the Museum of Transportation in St Louis, Missouri. The first P5s were built with box cabs. A grade crossing accident in which the crew were killed led to the substitution of a streamlined steeple type cab in later production, a design which was also applied to the GG1. Orders were placed for 90 production locomotives classified P5a due to minor changes from the prototypes. Production was split between General Electric and Westinghouse. The GE examples were assembled at GEs Erie, Pennsylvania facility, still a locomotive assembly plant today while final assembly for the Westinghouse order was subcontracted to the Baldwin Locomotive Works.

BROADWAY LIMITED IMPORT > Pennsylvania Railroad L1s 2-8-2 STEAM LOCOMOTIVE
(2015)
Class L1s on the Pennsylvania Railroad comprised 574 2-8-2 "Mikado" type steam locomotives constructed between 1914 and 1919 by the railroad's own Juniata Shops (344 examples) as well as the Baldwin Locomotive Works (205 units) and the Lima Locomotive Works (25 engines). It was the largest class of 2-8-2 locomotives anywhere, although other railroads had more Mikados in total. The L1s shared the boiler and many other components with the K4s 4-6-2 "Pacific" type, giving a total of 999 locomotives with many standard parts. Although the L1s type was quite successful, it was very much eclipsed in PRR service by the larger and more powerful I1s/I1sa 2-10-0 "Decapods", which arrived in service only two years after the L1s and were very suited to the PRR's mountain grades and heavy coal and mineral trains, and by the 1923 introduction of the M1 4-8-2 "Mountains" which took on the best high-speed freight runs. Large numbers of the class were stored out of service during the Great Depression, only to return to service during World War II.

ATLAS MASTER LINE > Pennsylvania Railroad 50' "plug-door" boxcar
(2015)
Sliding door box cars were basically the build standard prior to World War II. It wasn't until after the war that many railroads experimented with the use of plug doors, similar to those used on many refrigerator cars, on their box cars. The tight seal of the plug door, accompanied by insulated sides, ends, floor and roof panels, allowed these new box cars to carry perishables where temperature control was important but refrigeration wasn't necessary. This design, classified by the AAR (Association of American Railways) as 'RB' or 'RBL', meaning bunkerless refrigerator cars, gained popularity in the mid 1950'ss and the following decade saw over 3,000 similar cars built for a number of different owners.
